I grew up under a rock in a small hippie college town in the middle of nowhere (Ithaca, NY). These days I live in Berkeley, which is a large hippie college town in a great location. I'm a PhD student in computer science at UC Berkeley. My research focus is systems and security, and in particular managing large distributed systems. I tend to throw myself into things, both social and intellectual. I like to learn, and I poke my nose into all sorts of odd topics. I'm intensely interested in history and politics. Occasionally, I write about it, though I try to stick to topics where my technical background gives me at least some comparative advantage. The world doesn't need more general-purpose pundits. These days, I'm also learning to get around the Bay Area by bicycle. It's an interesting change of perspective from both walking and driving.
