The JCC started as the YMHA (Young Men’s Hebrew Association) in 1854 in Baltimore to provide help for Jewish immigrants. The YMHA expanded to serve the Jewish community in New York City and the various branches were later consolidated to become the Jewish Welfare Board. In 1917, the organizations were later renamed Jewish Community Centers or JCCs. Now, there is a Jewish community center in almost every state in the U.S. and more than 350 Jewish Community Centers, YM-YWHAs, and camp sites throughout the U.S. and Canada.
